Lightweight Wheels, Handcrafted in Germany

Aero meets Performance or the reference wheel in the aero wheel section for your road bike

The Lightweight FERNWEG is an aerodynamic wheel, available in two different profile heights and perfectly suited for a triathlon or ironman. Through months of testing in the wind tunnel and cooperation with various aerodynamics specialists and professional triathletes, Lightweight was able to develop a new construction based on the Lightweight MEILENSTEIN. The result is the Lightweight FERNWEG, a top carbon wheelset in the combination of aerodynamics, crosswind resistance, stiffness, handling and weight. The low rolling resistance leads you more easily to your goal, increases your speed and makes you more effective. Crosswinds do not disturb the FERNWEG and let athletes get the maximum performance out of the aero position. Where riders with other wheel products have to leave the aero position, the FERNWEG rider still lies on his handlebars and rides away from the competition.

The advantages and disadvantages of an Aero wheel set

When it comes to aerodynamics, wheels play a decisive role, but only at high speeds from around 40 km/h. Rim height and aerodynamics are inseparably linked. The high rim dissipates the airflow better, thus ensuring less drag and you can put more speed on the road. Additionally every racing bike with high-profile wheels looks faster and more aggressive and becomes a real eye-catcher on the road. High profile wheels are the epitome of a fast and beautiful aero or time trial bike. A disadvantage of these wheels, however, is that the height of the rim makes them more sensitive to strong crosswinds. Furthermore, the weight often increases because the wheel has a higher rim. The high art is to find the perfect mix and balance between handling, weight, aerodynamics and wind sensitivity. Every manufacturer finds his own way here and implements his own standards and ideas of the perfect wheel.

Every manufacturer has to make compromises when developing an aero wheel set. With the FERNWEG, Lightweight has an aero wheel in its portfolio that convinces with its combination of weight, stiffness, air resistance and wind sensitivity and makes a balanced ride possible.

The Lightweight FERNWEG is an aero wheelset with extremely high stability, a relatively low weight and an optimal weight distribution. The FERNWEG 85 mm disc wheelset weighs just 1765 g, the 63 mm disc set 1695 g. The 85 mm non-disc version (rim brake) weighs 1625 g in the clincher version and 1500 g as a tubular set. The 63 mm variant for rim-braked road bikes weighs 1560 g in the clincher version and 1435 g as a tubular version.

The fight for every single gram can be at the expense of stiffness. Lightweight is known for best values regarding stiffness. This also continues with the FERNWEG. At 80 Newton per millimetre (N/mm) the aerodynamic wheels are on average around 20 N/mm stiffer than comparable aero rims. The high stiffness of Aero wheels ensures agile handling and good acceleration.

Especially in crosswind conditions, the new design of the long-distance track comes into its own. Practical tests clearly showed that the triathlete has to leave his aerodynamic seating position later, as the wheel remains stable for a long time. This was also confirmed in the wind tunnel. Here, the FERNWEG shows a lower wind sensitivity than comparable competitors, even in crosswinds. This secures valuable seconds and ensures a comfortable ride.

Every Lightweight wheelset is carefully manufactured by hand in Germany. This can cause slight deviations in the surface structure and color. This is a characteristic quality attribute of the high-quality production process.  For more information we can be reached at 503-699-8665 or at Info@Lakeside-Bikes.com.

Lightweight Fernweg Aero wheels available in various styles

The new FERNWEG is available in the two rim heights 63 mm and 85 mm. The rim can be ordered in the non-disc version (rim brake) as clincher or tubular version and in the disc version, as tubeless version (FERNWEG EVO). The standard version is optionally available with a white or red label. In addition, the FERNWEG Black ED is available with a CeramicSpeed bearing, a black hub thrust piece on the front wheel and a black label.

  • for tubular tyres (Lighweight FERNWEG T Tubular ), clincher tyres (Lightweight FERNWEG C Clincher) or tubeless/tubular (FERNWEG EVO)
  • Rim brakes or disc brakes (EVO)
  • Carbon rim with 63 mm or carbon rim with 85 mm high profile
  • Front wheel rim brake 16 spokes, front wheel disc brake (EVO) 20 spokes
  • Rear wheel rim or disc brake 20 spokes each
  • New design with red or white lightweight label
  • The Schwarz (Black Edition)  - understated: spokes, rim and logos, greater durability and lower rolling resistance through CeramicSpeed ceramic bearings

Lightweight Fernweg Aero disc wheels

The braking performance of disc brakes is significantly better than the braking force over the brake flank. Disc brakes, however, cause a little more weight and losses in aerodynamics. Disc brakes cause less wear and tear on the wheel itself, as the braking surface wears independently of the rim, therefore the high profile wheels in the disc version are more durable. So the road cyclist has to decide what to focus on and whether to use rim brakes or disc brakes.

Laboratory tested, Lighweight Fernweg Aero wheel set

Our new aerodynamic carbon wheel is based on the Lightweight MEILENSTEIN and shines with the acceleration and STW values of the Lightweight MEILENSTEIN.

With the help of wind tunnel data, we tinkered with the aerodynamic advantage for the new, lightweight aero wheel from Lightweight. Tests were conducted with aerodynamics specialists and professional triathletes until the ideal shape and profile height were found. The result is a new, unique and aerodynamic high profile wheelset with absolutely impressive performance values from the wind tunnel. The combination of aerodynamics, crosswind resistance, stiffness, handling and weight ensure an unprecedented smoothness of your ride.
