Specialized was founded in 1974 by Mike Sinyard. Mike started out importing Italian bike components that were difficult to find in the United States, and carting them from shop to shop in a bicycle trailer. In 1976 Mike started manufacturing his own line of parts beginning with the Specialized Touring Tire. His first bicycle, the Japanese built Allez, came in 1979. Specialized introduced the Stumpjumper, in 1981. The first major production mountain bike in the world, an original Stumpjumper is on display at the Smithsonian Institution.
In the late 1990s Mike working with Dr. Andy Pruitt introduced the "Body Geometry Saddle" beginning a decades long process of introducing products and services under the "Body Geometry" brand that improve cycling efficiency while reducing the pain, suffering and injuries that were, until then, an accepted part of the cycling landscape.
And it goes on from there. Committed on a genetic level to continuous innovation, Mike has lead Specialized to its current preeminent position as the industry leader in combined bicycle, part and accessory design and manufacturing.
